iPhone ringtone length limit: why 30 seconds, and what to do

Updated . How we check these numbers

Quick answer: An iPhone ringtone can be at most 30 seconds long. On iOS 26, Use as Ringtone refuses longer files with a “too long” message, and GarageBand offers to cut anything longer down for you. Trim to 30 seconds or less before you try to set it.

Where the 30-second limit comes from

Apple’s own instructions for making a ringtone in GarageBand state the limit directly: ringtones can be up to 30 seconds, and longer exports get shortened. The iOS 26 Files route enforces the same rule; testers report a “too long” error as soon as a file runs past 30 seconds.

The limit makes sense once you remember how a ringtone plays: it loops until you answer or the call goes to voicemail. You never hear a full song, so the system keeps tones short.

What happens to a longer file

Method Longer than 30 s
iOS 26, Use as Ringtone Refused with a “too long” message
GarageBand, Share › Ringtone Offers to shorten it, keeping the first 30 seconds
Syncing from a computer Files that are too long don’t appear as tones

GarageBand’s automatic shortening keeps the start of your clip. If your song opens with a slow intro, that’s the part you’ll get, which is rarely the part you wanted.

How to pick the best 30 seconds

  1. Find the hook. The chorus or the most recognizable riff is what makes a ringtone yours.
  2. Start just before it. Begin half a second before the hook lands, so the first ring isn’t clipped.
  3. Fade the edges. A half-second fade in and a one- to two-second fade out make the loop sound deliberate.
  4. Shorter is fine. Fifteen to twenty seconds often sounds better than thirty, because the best part repeats sooner.

Trimming without an app

On iOS 26, Voice Memos can trim its own recordings (Edit › Trim), so a voice memo is the easiest free route. For an MP3 or M4A song file there’s no built-in trimmer, which is why most people end up in GarageBand or a ringtone app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get around the 30-second limit?

No. It's set by iOS. A ringtone repeats until you answer, so a 30-second loop covers any call anyway.

Is there a minimum length?

There's no published minimum. Very short clips work, but under three or four seconds the loop can sound abrupt; a short fade helps.

Does the limit apply to text tones too?

Text tones use the same custom tones list, so the same 30-second files are what you'll pick from. In practice text tones should be much shorter, two to five seconds.
