How to make a ringtone from a video on iPhone

Updated . How we check these numbers

Quick answer: A ringtone has to be audio, so first pull the sound out of the video, then trim it to 30 seconds and set it. For free, use a Shortcut with the Encode Media action set to Audio Only to save an M4A, then trim and share it with Use as Ringtone (iOS 26). Or pick the video in Ringtonius, which does all three steps in one place.

Why you can’t set a video directly

Use as Ringtone accepts audio files, not videos. Your iPhone’s videos keep their sound in an audio track inside the file, so the job is to save that track as its own audio file, ideally just the 30 seconds you want.

The free route: Shortcuts

  1. Open Shortcuts, tap +, and add the Select Photos action (turn on videos).
  2. Add Encode Media, tap Show More, and turn on Audio Only.
  3. Add Save File so the result lands in the Files app.
  4. Run it and pick your video. You get an M4A of the full soundtrack.

That M4A is usually longer than 30 seconds, so it still needs trimming before Use as Ringtone will take it. iOS has no built-in trimmer for audio files, which is the step where most people give up or open GarageBand.

The quick route: Ringtonius

  1. Tap Video and choose it from your photo library.
  2. The waveform opens on the loudest stretch. Drag the brass handles to the part you want.
  3. Preview, then tap Save ringtone and Set as ringtone.

Good video sounds for ringtones

  • A child’s first word or a big laugh
  • A crowd singing the chorus at a concert you filmed
  • A pet’s bark or a friend’s catchphrase
  • Your own band rehearsing

Keep it loud and clear: a ringtone plays across a room, so a whispered moment will get lost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a TikTok or Instagram video?

Only if you have the video file and the right to use its sound. Videos you saved to Photos yourself work like any other video; downloading other people's content may break the platform's rules.

Will the sound quality drop?

Phone videos record AAC audio, which is the same family as an M4A ringtone, so the result sounds as good as the original recording.

Does the video stay on my phone?

With Shortcuts and with Ringtonius, yes. Online converters upload the video to a server first.
